Thomas Sabo Launch Party

Event date: 24 April 2008

Report by Matt Le

Thomas Sabo is a jewelry designer from Germany with a big heart! At the launch of his new collection, which has a space theme, the event company doing the launch party contacted the Singapore Garrison to troop at the launch party. Our initial reaction was to decline the invite as not only did it not have anything to do with Star Wars, there was no charity angle to it. After some further discussion, the Make a Wish Foundation was suggested and a donated amount was agreed upon on behalf of the 501st & Garrison - $10,000! Happy did not describe how great that donation would be to the Foundation.

“Thank you for such a generous contribution to Make-A-Wish Foundation from Mr Sabo. We are thrilled that Make-A-Wish was chosen as the beneficiary and are immensely thrilled that 501st legion will be there - it adds such a wonderful element of excitement.” – Debra Devied, Make-A-Wish Foundation.

A total of 6 troopers were deployed for the event – 4 TKs & 2 Minders. The "Six of Us" Legion gathered at checkpoint lobby before heading up to the mission location. The locker room requisitioned for us has to be one of the best we have had so far. There were great views from the 69th floor, trooper specific chairs, San Pellegrino sparkling water and pecan cookies. One downside is that we had to share it with models.

We did a quick recce of the venue before things kicked off. The venue had been fully decked out in the theme of Robots. There was a tunnel at the entrance with lots of blue snake lights. Once inside, there were robots, spaceships and stars decorating the entire venue. Being a club and there also being a fashion show, there were plenty of steps and displays that would be out of trooper visual range for when we entered.

The mission for the night was to enter the venue after the fashion show had been completed. By the time we had arrived, the venue was dark and full of A-list imperial denizens. We proceeded into the venue and took up position for the cheque presentation. There was a big cheque with 10,000 credits for Make-a-Wish Foundation, part of which would be used to answer Larry’s wish to have a space themed laptop. Denise Keller (MTV Asia VJ) and Thomas Sabo made the presentation to Debra Devied. We are sure that those credits will help to grant a lot of wishes for some deserving kids. A great charity that really puts a smile on kid’s faces.

Our thanks to Mark and Steve for clearing this event!
